What is Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

Social and emotional development refers to how children start to understand who they are, what they are feeling and what to expect when interacting with others. It is the development of being able to:

  • Form and sustain positive relationships.

  • Experience, manage and express emotions.

  • Explore and engage with the environment.

Positive social and emotional development is important. This development influences a child’s self-confidence, empathy, the ability to develop meaningful and lasting friendships and partnerships, and a sense of importance and value to those around him/her. Children’s social and emotional development also influences all other areas of development.

Self Regulation

Self-regulation allows kids to manage their emotions, behavior and body movement when they are faced with a situation that is tough to handle. This is particularly important now as we struggle with a great deal of uncertainty. Self-regulation allows children to stay in control of themselves while still staying focused and paying attention. This requires practice and the skill develops over time.

Mindfulness Resource

Mindfulness is learning how to clear your mind and focus on the present moment. Rather than thinking about what happened earlier in the day or worrying about what might happen in the future, mindfulness helps you focus on the now. Practicing mindfulness is especially important right now because we are all experiencing a great deal of stress and worry about the current health and wellbeing of our families and community. Incorporating mindful practices into your daily routine can help calm anxiety and build healthy coping skills.
