August 1, 2024

Dear Caravel Families,

I hope you have all had time to enjoy our Maine summer, and the many activities that go along with the beautiful weather.   It is hard to believe in a few short weeks we will be back together again.  We have been working hard this summer to prepare the building for students to return, and to create the best schedule and plan for an exciting school year!

Included in this mailing is a letter from your grade-level team which includes the name of your instructional group teacher — the group students will rotate through classes with — as well as some important information about what you will be learning this year, and what you might need to help you prepare.  There are also suggestions for school supplies if you would like to purchase them for your student.  If you need assistance with this, please reach out to us as we have many school supplies available at school for students.

I have also included a few important reminders about the school in general.  Parents, please make sure to add our app to your phone so that you will receive notifications, as the next round of communication will come through email, text, and/or the app.  If you don’t have the app, just search for RSU 87, ME in the App Store or Google Play.

A few important things to remember:

  • The first day of school is Wednesday, August 28, 2024.

  • School begins at 7:35 -- please be here by that time.  School will begin dismissal at 2:28.

    • Arrival time will be between 7:25-7:35.  Please do not drop off prior to 7:25, as there will be no supervision.

    • Buses will be dropping off and picking up in the front of the building, and parent drop off and pick up will be around the right hand side and all the way around the back.  This helps us move traffic in a more efficient and safe manner.

    • Attendance is very important for your child’s success here at Caravel and beyond.  Even missing a few minutes every morning can have a huge impact on the amount of important instructional time.

  • School breakfast will be served during the morning time- 7:25-7:35.  Students arriving after that time will be offered something but it may be different than the menu.  Lunch options will be laid out in our monthly calendar menu and Grab and Go options will also be available.  Students MUST sign up for lunch the morning of but lunch costs will still be covered.

  • Fall Athletics will be starting on the first day of school. Sports Physicals are required for all students that plan on attending try-outs for any Caravel athletic team, prior to the start of the season.  They only need to be updated every two years.   All we need is a note from the doctor’s office that clears the student for physical activity. If you have questions on when your child’s physical expires, please call or email and we can check.  We will send out sign-ups and practice information through our digital platforms in a few weeks (students must be eligible through our policy in order to play).

  • Please be on the lookout for more information regarding open house/parent nights in September as we move closer to the start of the school year and remember, this will come through email, Facebook, the Remind App, and Apptegy

  • If you would like to purchase Caravel Bobcat apparel, please visit our Sideline Store or you can purchase from our parent group- the CMS Club and support our school (see our website for CMS club pricing)

  • If you would like to help support our students, please join the CMS Club- Sept. 10th @ 6:00 pm

  • We will again be utilizing PowerSchool for student grades and information this year, which will be open to parents and students.  Information on how to log in will be provided in the first day paperwork

  • We will be very firm on our cell phone policy this year as written in our handbook.  The handbook will be coming home with students on the first day of school.  Students will not be allowed to use cell phones or have cell phones on them during the school day.  If they need to use them for parent communication, they will be allowed to use them with permission in the office.  If parents need to communicate with students, please do that through the office.  Cell phones may be collected at the beginning of the day by homeroom teachers or at the beginning of each class.  If cell phones are used, they may be confiscated.

Our staff has been working on planning an engaging first few days of school, as well as new lessons and experiences for the upcoming school year.  We will continue to offer clubs and activities for kids to join and make connections with others, along with our music, art, and athletic programs.  We will focus hard on learning and practicing habits that will send our students off, ready for the next steps on their educational journey.  Homework and classwork will be essential, as well as classroom behaviors, as we focus on academic success throughout the school year.

We are looking forward to inviting all students back for a wonderful 2024-2025 school year here at Caravel.  Please reach out if you have any questions.  Thank you for helping to make our school community great!

Sincerely,

Nicole Middleswart
